...

Answer the following questions based on the article above(A) It was mentioned that "the mark of puberty between the ages of 13 and 17 signalled emotional maturity – a sign of readiness for a relationship". Do you agree that between 13 and 17 is a good time to go steady? And why?(B) Interestingly, the article also mentions that sex was not a major factor when dating but rather companionship and conversation. Based on your own experience or interaction with your peers, how accurate or true is that opinion of our youths in Singapore?

(A)No, at that time we are usually not really ready to go into a relationship. We are still young and we should place more emphasis on our studies. I feel that at such a young age we are still immature and innocent. Right now we should only have crushes and infatuation as most people only experience true love at a more matured age like 18+++. At this age we usually only have crushes, but if we really like a person we should get to know him/her as a friend first before asking the person out much much later.

(B)It is true. We live in a conservative Asian society and actually should not show an outward display of affection or have sex yet. Teenagers in Singapore usually look for a girlfriend/boyfriend because of common interest or just like and want companionship.

Activity 2: What do You Really Want?

I must like that person. If it is just a one sided love, it is of no use. We must share the same interests. The person must be kind hearted and have a heart of compassion. Love is blind. The most important for a relationship to work is for both parties to love each other :) Hopefully the person is of the same age as me and feminine and innocent as it would be better. We will have fewer quarrels and get along in harmony. With the same interests we would not argue about our different interests!!!!! :)

Activity 2: What do You Really Want?

She must be caring and kind hearted. Then she will love her boy-friend and this would avoid any quarrels and will get along in harmony.

Session 6

In life, you will meet many people; some will encourage and help you and others that will discourage or even distract you. These people will eventually play a part in molding your character, values and life principles. Can you identify the voices around you? “Voices” refers to those that are able to influence or make an impact on your actions/thoughts. E.g. Parents, friends, or even people who you do not know. Sometimes these “voices” can influence you without you being aware of it.

Question: As a student, what are the “voices” that surround you? What can you do to prevent those “voices” that can influence you negatively? Go to the website below, complete the quiz, and find out if you are the one influencing others.

The Heat's On - The pressure is all around you, but you're dealing with it.
Based on your answers, you're probably feeling some pressure. You can start by recognizing the influences in your life and trusting your instincts. If you decide something's not for you, go with that. Your choices matter so try to make decisions that you can stand by and not feel bad about later.

A great example is our friends. We spend about eight hours in school. School is a place where kids interact and learn together. In this eight hours a lot of things can happen. I feel that friends have more power to influence you as they are the same age and really play a major role. Its monkey see monkey do. So, we will pick up whatever our friends do very fast because everyone is doing it, and you do not want to stand out. We should only follow the positive influences by our friends.

Another is our parents. They are with us everyday. A child whose parent smokes is 4 times more likely to also pick up smoking. A child who listens to his/her parents music is likely to be a musician. A child who is often brought to a swimming pool by his/her parents will probably be a swimmer. Children whose parents are a bad influence should be very careful.

Overall, we should be very careful not to let ourselves be influenced negatively by avoiding temptation. Staying away from bad influences will assist greatly.

Cyber Bullying

“Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you.” Do you think it's true? False? What do you think?

False. The breaking of bones is being physically hurt. Theoretically speaking, harm does not mean only physical harm. Cyber bullying uses verbal and psychological harm to hurt the victim emotionally. Cyber bullying is totally anonymous, except for the fact that is traceable. Every computer has a digital signature called an IP address that can be traced. However, a smart cyber bully will used different computers like those in cyber cafes so that he cannot be traced. He will also travel around his neighbourhood and use cyber cafes so that he cannot be traced. He will create a separate email account so that it does not trace to his personal email address. Due to all these and more, cyber bullying is much more dangerous. Since we do not know who the bully is, we should always beware of people who have ill intentions.

Session 3-Cyber Gaming

After you read, I would like you to answer a few questions.
a) What are your views in pursuing a career with the gaming industry, especially in Singapore?
b) What qualities does Jason Chionh have that allow him to do what he wish to do?

a) I feel that in the gaming industry, piracy is a big issue and it is hard to emerge successful. However, the possibilities are limitless. There are many Industries that offer job opportunities such as Lucasfilm. As long as you have the determination and passion to strive for the job, go for it. However, opportunities in the Singapore gaming industry is not a lot as most gaming companies are in Japan or America, like Sega. In Singapore, there are not much opportunities to pursue a career in the gaming industry. However, as long as you work hard, the chance will always be there.

b) Jason Chionh persevered to get a job in the gaming industry. Even though his parents objected to it, his teacher was not encouraging him to do so, he strived and persevered, with the hope that one day he could live to fulfill his dreams.

Cyber Crap

The attachment probably will contain a virus or such. These chain mails usually contain harmful content. John should mark this mail as junk and delete it. He should NEVER forward it to other people.

Session 2- Cyber Crap
John was checking his email one day, and he saw this particular one, which was sent to him from someone he did not know. The subject of the email sounded urgent, so instead of deleting it, John clicked on it to read it.
Subject: 81 feared dead from swine flu in MexicoI sent this email to you with a very heavy heart. I’m sure you have heard of the recent swine flu outbreak. Novel influenza A (H1N1) is a new flu virus of swine origin that was first detected in April, 2009. The virus is infecting people and is spreading from person-to-person, and has sparked a growing outbreak of illness in the United States with an increasing number of cases being reported internationally as well.
To date, A/H1N1 flu has killed 337 people in 121 nations and regions and the number of the total infected exceeded 80,000, a top official of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday. There are already 1003 cases in Singapore, a country known for its stringent health measures.Just FYI, in 1918, there was flu pandemic -commonly known as the Spanish flu- which was caused by an unusually severe and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1, claimed the lives of 50-100 million people.
Researchers are speculating if the one that is ongoing will have that high number of death tolls, that is, if the pandemic persists. I’ve attached a file on how to protect yourself during this period of outbreak. I sincerely urged you to take a look at it, so that you can take the said preventive measures. You are not only protecting yourself, but also the people around you.My cousin, who lives in Mexico, introduced me to a type of medicine that is said to work effectively. I’ve also given you the link in the file attachment.
I strongly encourage you to purchase the medicine, as I have also purchased it myself.Yours sincerely,Max WilkertinNow, what should John do? Should he open the file attachment? Should he buy the medicine?

I feel that everyone knows that the two medicines that work against H1N1 are Tamiflu and Relenza. Although there is a cure, this is totally crap , John should not even touch the thing. This is just cyber crap. John should delete this message.

Session 5B

Session 5B -Pornography

With constant bombardment of such images from the media and the internet, what do you think can be done to protect your mind from being filled with such materials?

I think we had to practice a lot of self-control. We also can suscribe to maybe some filitering service so that we do not accidentally click on those pop ups and pollute our mind. Also, we must know what type of information we are looking at.

Session One

Session 1-Revealing Information

In Session 1, we shared about how your online identity is public, not private, and how you should always be careful what you post online.

Watch the following clip linked below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOwpGF1SOQM
What do you think the clip is trying to share?

I think that its trying to share that social networking sites let everyone see your profile, including strangers. Your profile may contains your personal infos, for example, name, age, gender, mobile phone number, etc. The person reading your profile may be as innocent as a busy, or a person with bad intentions. So we must take precautions when we post our personal information online.
